The closest the U.S. ever came to fascism with a cross was FDR and Father Coughlin. They are of Sinclair Lewis’ time. To get a better feel for the thoughts of Sinclair Lewis on this topic, read his novel, It Can’t Happen Here.
The Sinclair Lewis Society disowns that specific quote.
Ron Paul is looking more and more like someone’s attic dwelling crazy old aunt.

The attribution may/may not be there. It supposedly doesn’t appear in the novel “It Can’t Happen Here” but the sentence does seem to sum up the essential themes of the novel very well. This could be one of the many “if he didn’t say it, he should have” quotes in the world.
Wikipedia has the attribution under review, they’re as accurate as Brittanica (FWIW).
Snopes has a thread on the attribution.
Good summary of some attributions here.
The U.S. is already a fascist state. Then again, many other states are, too.
I’m deeply sorry to hear about your aunt.
